1. Doorway Pages - Doorway Pages are pages that have been written specifically for the search engines and not for humans. Doorway pages focus on keyword phrase and not quality content. Then these pages want you to click here to go to the page written for humans.?

Quoted from Google "Google does not encourage the use of automatically generated pages that are designed for search engines instead of users. We want to point users to useful content pages, not to doorways or splash screens."

Notice that Google specifically mentions that they want their users to go to useful content pages. Content is key with search engine optimization! Google also mentions this again on the Webmaster Guideline Pages and states "Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content."?

2. Broken Links and Incorrect HTML Coding - We see alot of incorrect coding with Yahoo Stores. Many owners will put head, body, and html tags in the caption field of their store. This is a HUGE mistake. The Yahoo Store already has these tags in place and by placing these tags in your caption field you are creating duplicate tags. This can cause the search engines to be easily confused and not index your page correctly or can cause the search engines to skip the page entirely. We also see a META tag placed in the body section instead of the head section and this can cause the search engine spider to ignore the tag. This will reduce your relevancy and ranking.

3. Using Dynamic Pages Instead of Static - If you decide to use dynamic pages (i.e., the URL contains a "?" character), be aware that not every search engine spider crawls dynamic pages as well as static pages. It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them few.

4. Hidden Text or Hidden Links - The use of hidden text or small text that is unreadable to the eye looks very deceptive to the search engines. Anything deceptive will get you banned quickly. 6. Duplicate Content - Again this is a deceptive practice. Google wants to show unique results in the top 10. If you have 50 competitors using the same information on each and every page, only 1 of you will get listed. But take the time to create unique content for your pages and you will be moving up the search engines in no time! This is mentioned twice in the Google Webmaster Guidelines. Quoting Google again, "Avoid "doorway" pages created just for search engines, or other "cookie cutter" approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content."

Don't get involved with link farms and link schemes. Focus on getting nonreciprocal links for your website. Directories are an easy way to accomplish this. Also write articles and include your website link in your article. Submit your article to several different article directories such as Goarticles.com?

8. Using Images Instead of Text - Search engines can not read images. Although those buttons look great, they do nothing for you. Using buttons for your navigation will only hurt you. You can use text and have your site look great too! Use the button images as backgrounds and place the text on top of them.?

9. Not Using Correct Title or Alt tags - Again google is looking for quality and descriptive content that is relevant to your page. Let me repeat an important part of that statement....relevant to your page. Let's say that right now the number 1 search term is Joe Smith and you try to add Joe Smith to your Title Tag and Alt Tags on a page that is about Tiffany Jones. Will this work? No. It needs to be relevant.

10. Trying to Deceive the Search Engines - This can be done a number of ways. Of which one of them is called "Spamming the Search Engines". Basically over repeating keywords. Remember always that you are writing for the humans and not the search engine bots. Write clear information and give your readers (and the search engines) good quality content.

However, the data you receive from your host company can be overwhelming if you don't understand how to apply it to your particular business and website. Some experts believe back links are one of the heaviest factors that weigh your SERP on Google. Back links also determine your Google Page Rank. A back link is nothing more than a link to your page from another webpage. All back links don't have the same impact on your webpage. A back link from a small website will not give you as many points as a link from a major webpage. Also the back links should come from web pages with relevant content to yours. If your webpage is about making money, than back links from an entertainment gossip website wouldn't weigh to heavy in obtaining a high PR.

Many webmasters face the same problem, which is how they go about generating back links from other web pages. When I receive this question in my email it's usually the easiest for me to answer. There are many different ways to generate back links. I will cover just a few I've always used and have had great success with. Most of them just involve getting your webpage out there. The main thing we need to focus on is generating quality back links not just quantity.

Link Exchange

This is the simplest method of them all. I still to this day use link exchange techniques starting the first day my site goes live. I find a webpage that I want a back link from and add a link to my page. Then I find their email and send them an email stating that I have added them to my page and I'd appreciate it if they would add me. Surprisingly most webmasters are generally nice enough to exchange with you. If your webpage is still really small and doesn't have a Google Page Rank many larger web pages will ignore your request. Occasionally you may get a rude email from a grumpy webmaster, but just ignore it and move on to the next webpage.

The reason I like the link exchange method is because you know what webpage you're getting the link from. This allows you to choose quality web pages to receive a link from. I base the quality of a website not by how much traffic it gets, but by the quality of content. Even if a webpage is fairly new and getting virtually no traffic, but they have great content I will still link with them. This is because just like your page their page has the potential to grow into an enormous powerhouse if they keep up the great content.

There is one major disadvantage to link exchanging. You won't get as many Google points as you would if the links were one way inbound links. When two web pages link to each other they are called reciprocal links. The search engine determines that this is the result of some type of communication between the webmasters, thus resulting in Google giving fewer points. Writing articles to receive inbound back links

Article writing is nothing new or ground breaking. It has been a tactic used by webmasters for years and continues to be very effective to this day. Writing an informative article pertaining to your content is always a great way to generate back links. I've got into the habit of writing at least 1 article per day. Many of these articles never leave my laptop's documents folders, but it keeps my writing skills sharp. At first writing articles can seem like torture, especially if you hated writing essays in school like I did. I find the more you write the easier it becomes.

Submitting one or two articles won't be very effective. I submit all my articles to ezinearticles.com and goarticles.com. I submit around 3-4 articles per week. Many people recognize my name for quality articles. When someone needs some quality content for their website they often check if I have submitted any new articles. Focus on posting quality articles not quantity. If it takes you a week to write a quality article, only submit one article per week.

The goal is to entice webmasters to repost your articles on their page. Article directories allow authors to have a signature to put your URL and 1 or 2 sentences about yourself. When webmasters republish your article they are required to include your signature. This is what provides the inbound back link to your webpage.

Call me old fashioned, but I honestly believe the best way to get quality back links is good ole fashion quality content. I'm sure you've heard this 1000000 times, but it really is true. Any body with a computer and $9 can have a website, but most people don't have the mind, or work ethic to provide quality content to web surfers.

If another webmaster finds one of your posts to be useful he or she may reference it on their webpage. Also webmasters tend to link to relevant web pages that they find useful, so their readers can also share this useful resource. It's a win/win situation for you because you get a valuable back link and a little boost in traffic absolutely free.

The title is pretty self explanatory. Some popular websites will let you pay for them to place your link on their page. Usually they charge a reoccurring monthly fee for a set price. I personally never buy back links and don't suggest you do it either. Call me old fashioned, but I rather earn my back links than pay for one.

As a minimum, a text only set of links mirroring your main structure can be nestled at the bottom of the page. This will at least give search engines something to work with. A good alternative is to use CSS as a method to retain a classy design while also offering linking text. Where images are used it's always a good idea to remember to use ALT tags. As search engines effectively ignore images, so the ALT tag offers a little bit of something they can latch onto.

Flash animation is another area similar to graphics that offers nothing to search engines. To the user however, they can be massively attractive and provide an area from where a stream of information can be delivered. The best is to use flash in moderation, striking a balance between engaging the user while satisfying the engines. Just like graphical navigation anything important communicated to the user through flash should perhaps be subtly repeated in the regular text somewhere.

It's often said but nevertheless it's amazing how many people still ignore the basic meta tags. There's plenty of information around which will help anyone get a quick understanding of how best to fill out the title, description and keyword meta tags. While meta tags are important they are only a minor aspect of any one page. It's imperative that meta tags properly mirror the content of a page but of greater importance is that the content has an array of words and phrases that are relevant to the niche in which you are trying to compete. Don't go searching Google for words you think you should be listed under if your pages doesn't have them within the content.

1. Check Search Engine Crawl Error Pages

It's important to monitor search engine crawl errors reports to keep on top of how your site and its pages are performing. Monitoring error reports can help you determine when and where Googlebot or another crawler is having trouble indexing your content - which can help you find a solution to the problem.

2. Create/update robots.txt and sitemap files

These files are supported by major search engines and are incredibly useful tools for ensuring that crawlers index your important site content while avoiding those sections/files that you deem to be either unimportant or cause problems in the crawl process. In many cases we've seen the proper use of these files make all the difference between a total crawl failure for a site and a full index of content pages which makes them crucial from an SEO standpoint.

3. Check Googlebot activity reports

These reports allow you to monitor how long it's taking Googlebot to access your pages. This information can be very important if you are worried that you may be on a slow network or experiencing web server problems. If it is taking search engine crawlers a long time to index your pages it may be the case that there are times when they "time out" and stop trying. Additionally, if the crawlers are unable to call your pages up quickly there is a good chance users are experiencing the same lag in load times, and we all know how impatient internet users can be.

4. Check how your site looks to browsers without image and JavaScript support

One of the best ways to determine just what your site looks like to a search engine crawler is to view your pages in a browser with image and JavaScript support disabled. Mozilla's Firefox browser has a plug-in available called the "Web Developer Toolbar" that adds this functionality and a lot more to the popular standards-compliant browser. If after turning off image and JavaScript support you aren't able to make sense of your pages at all it is a good sign that your site is not well-optimized for search. While images and JavaScript can add a lot to the user experience they should always be viewed as a "luxury" - or simply an improvement upon an already-solid textual content base.

5. Ensure that all navigation is in HTML, not images

One of the most common mistakes in web design is to use images for site navigation. While for some companies and webmasters SEO is not a concern and therefore they can get away with this for anyone worried about having well-optimized pages this should be the first thing to go. Not only will it render your site navigation basically valueless for search engine crawlers, but within reason very similar effects can usually be achieved with CSS roll-overs that maintain the aesthetic impact while still providing valuable and relevant link text to search engines.

6. Check that all images include ALT text

Failing to include descriptive ALT text with images is to miss out on another place to optimize your pages. Not only is this important for accessibility for vision-impaired users, but search engines simply can't "take a look" at your images and decipher the content there. They can only see your ALT text, if you've provided it, and the associates they'll make with the image and your relevant content will be based exclusively on this attribute.

7. Use Flash content sparingly

Several years ago Flash hit the scene and spread like wild fire. It was neat looking, quick to download and brought interactivity and animation on the web to a new height. However, from an SEO standpoint Flash files might as well be spacer GIFs - they're empty. Search engines are not able to index text/content within a Flash file. For this reason, while Flash can do a lot for presentation, from an accessibility and SEO standpoint it should be used very sparingly and only on non-crucial content.

8. Ensure that each page has a unique <title> and meta description tag

Optimization of <title> tags is one of the most important on-page SEO points. Many webmasters are apparently unaware and use either duplicate <title> tags for multiple pages or do not target search traffic at all within this valuable tag. Run a search on a competitive keyword of your choice on Google - click on the first few links that show up and see what text appears in the title bar for the window. You should see right away that this is a key place to include target keywords for your pages.

9. Make sure that important page elements are HTML

The simple fact to keep in mind when optimizing a page is that the crawlers are basically only looking at your source code. Anything you've put together in a Flash movie, an image or any other multimedia component is likely to be invisible to search engines. With that in mind it should be clear that the most important elements of your page, where the heart of your content will lie, should be presented in clean, standards-compliant and optimized HTML source code.

10. Be sure to target keywords in your page content

Some webmasters publish their pages in hopes that they will rank well for competitive keywords within their topic or niche. However, this will simply never happen unless you include your target keywords in the page content. This means creating well-optimized content that mentions these keywords frequently without triggering spam filters. Any way you cut it you're going to need to do some writing - if you don't like doing it yourself it's a good idea to hire a professional copy writer. Simply put: without relevant content that mentions your target keywords you will not rank well.

11. Don't use frames

There is still some debate as to whether frames are absolutely horrible for SEO or whether they are simply just not the best choice. Is there really a difference? Either way, you probably don't want to use frames. Crawlers can have trouble getting through to your content and effectively indexing individual pages, for one thing. For another, most functionalities that the use of frames allows is easily duplicated using proper CSS coding. There is still some use for a frames-based layout, but it is still better to avoid it if at all possible.

12. Make sure that your server is returning a 404 error code for unfound pages

We've all seen it. We're browsing around at a new or familiar site, clicking links and reading content, when we get the infamous blank screen that reads "404 page not found" error. While broken links that point to these pages should definitely be avoided you also don't want to create a "custom error page" to replace this page. Why? Well, it's simple: if you generate a custom error page crawlers can spend time following broken links that they won't know are broken. A 404 error page is easily recognizable, and search engine crawlers are programmed to stop following links that generate this page. If crawlers end up in a section of your site that is down through an old link that you missed they might not spend the time to index the rest of your site.

13. Ensure that crawlers will not fall into infinite loops

Many webmasters see fit to include scripting languages, such as PERL, PHP and ASP to add interactive functionality to their web pages. Whether for a calendar system, a forum, eCommerce functionality for an online store, etc. scripting is used quite frequently on the internet. However, what some webmasters don't realize is that unless they use robots.txt files or take other preventative measures search engine crawlers can fall into what are called "infinite loops" in their pages. Imagine, if you will, a script that allows a webmaster to add a calendar to one of his pages. Now, any programmer worth his salt would base this script on calculations - it would auto-generate each page based on the previous month and a formula to determine how the days and dates would fall. That script, depending on sophistication, could plausibly extend infinitely into the past or future. Now think of the way a crawler works - it follows links, indexes what it finds, and follows more links. What's to stop a crawler from clicking "next month" in a calendar script an infinite number of times? Nothing - well, almost nothing. Crawlers are well-built programs that need to run efficiently. As such they are built to recognize when they've run into an "infinite loop" situation like this, and they will simply stop indexing pages at a site that is flagged for this error.

Google's New SEO Rules

Google has recently made some pretty significant changes in its ranking algorithm. The latest update, dubbed by Google forum users as "Allegra", has left some web sites in the dust and catapulted others to top positions. Major updates like this can happen a few times a year at Google, which is why picking the right search engine optimization company can be the difference between online success and failure. However, it becomes an increasingly difficult decision when SEO firms themselves are suffering from the Allegra update.

Over-optimization may have played the biggest part in the dropping of seo-guy.com from the top 50 Google results. Filtering out web sites that have had readability sacrificed for optimization is a growing trend at Google.
